Hanle vs Pangong: Which Should You Visit?

Two of eastern Ladakh’s great destinations sit within a day’s drive of each other, but they offer very different trips. Pangong Tso is the famous, cinema-made lake most travellers photograph; Hanle is the quiet, remote dark-sky reserve serious stargazers seek out. Here’s an honest comparison to help you choose — or fit both into one journey.

Pangong Tso — the famous lake

Pangong is closer to Leh, easier to reach, and instantly recognisable — a huge, high-altitude lake whose water shifts through blues and greens as the light changes. It’s spectacular by day, and on a clear night the still water mirrors the stars beautifully. Because it’s so well known, it also draws the most visitors, so it can feel busy in peak season.

Choose Pangong if you want jaw-dropping daytime scenery, a shorter and easier drive, and you’re happy sharing the view.

Hanle — the dark-sky reserve

Hanle is further, higher, and quieter. There’s no famous lake — the attraction is the sky itself. As India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, it offers some of the darkest, clearest nights in the country, with the Milky Way bright enough to cast a shadow. It rewards travellers who slow down, stay a couple of nights, and time their trip around the new moon.

Choose Hanle if stargazing is the point of your trip, you want to escape the crowds, and you don’t mind a long drive and simple, high-altitude homestay comforts.

If your priority is the night sky, Hanle wins — it’s a protected Dark Sky Reserve, and there’s simply no crowd or comparison. If your priority is a famous view with an easy drive, Pangong is hard to beat.

Can you do both?

Yes — and many travellers do. They sit in the same broad region of eastern Ladakh, so a longer Ladakh itinerary can take in Pangong for the scenery and Hanle for the stars. If you only have time for one and the night sky is what you’re chasing, make it Hanle.

Planning a Hanle trip

If Hanle is your pick, plan it properly: it’s a full-day drive, needs permits, and is best around the new moon.
