Hanle sits above 4,300 m in a high desert, so the weather is defined by two things: thin, dry air and huge day-to-night swings. Even in summer, days can be pleasant while nights drop below freezing. Here's a month-by-month feel for the year — treat it as a guide, not a guarantee, and always check conditions close to your trip. For the bigger picture, see Altitude & Weather.
Spring (April–May)
The plateau is shaking off winter. Days warm up but nights stay cold, roads may still be affected by late snow, and travellers are few. A quiet shoulder season with clear, cold skies for stargazing.
Early summer (June)
One of the friendliest months. Comfortable, bright days and cold but manageable nights. Roads are open, homestays are running, and the sky is excellent. A great first-visit window.
Peak summer (July–August)
Warmest of the year, though "warm" is relative — nights are still cold. This is the main travel season, so book ahead. August brings the Perseid meteor shower to these dark skies — see the 2026 sky calendar. A stray high-desert shower is possible but rain is generally light.
Early autumn (September)
Many regulars' favourite: crisp, stable, exceptionally clear air, thinning crowds and superb transparency for the night sky. Nights get sharply colder as the month goes on. See Best Time to Visit for Stargazing.
Late autumn (October)
Beautiful and very clear, but cold sets in hard and services begin to wind down. For the prepared, the skies are magnificent.
Winter (November–March)
Extreme. Temperatures plunge far below freezing — often into the −20s °C and colder at night — roads can close, and many homestays reduce operations. The reward is the year's most transparent skies, for those equipped to handle it. Read Hanle in Winter.
