Meet the Families Behind Hanle's Homestays

Ask anyone who's been to Hanle what they remember most, and it's rarely just the sky. It's the family who poured them endless cups of butter tea, patiently answered their questions, and made a remote corner of the Himalaya feel like home. This is a small tribute to the people who make a Hanle stay what it is.

Who they are

Most Hanle families are Changpa — the semi-nomadic herders of the Changthang plateau — and Ladakhi communities who have lived with this land, and this altitude, for generations. Their days are shaped by livestock, weather, and the rhythm of a place where nature sets the terms. To understand their world, read Hanle Monastery and the Living Culture of the Changpa.

Why they host

Homestays let families share their home and earn a living without leaving the land or their way of life. When you stay, your money goes directly to them — not to a distant hotel chain — helping keep the community rooted here. That's why we believe a homestay is the only real way to experience Hanle; see Homestays vs Camping.

What genuine hospitality looks like here

  • A warm room and a bukhari stove after a freezing night under the stars.
  • Home-cooked thukpa and skyu, made from what the land provides (What You'll Eat).
  • Stories of winters, herds and the sky — and a curiosity about you in return.
  • A quiet generosity that asks for nothing back.

How to be a good guest

The relationship goes both ways. Simple things matter:

  • Accept the tea, eat what's offered, and don't waste food carried in from far away.
  • Ask before photographing people or homes, and respect a "no."
  • Tread lightly on a fragile place (How to Be a Responsible Visitor).
  • Pay in cash and tip fairly — it goes straight into the community.

The real souvenir

You'll leave Hanle with photos of the Milky Way, sure. But the thing that stays with you is the warmth of a family who let you in. That's not a feature you can book — it's the whole point.
