Let's be honest up front: you should plan to be mostly off-grid in Hanle. That's part of why the skies are so dark and the nights so quiet. But "mostly" isn't "completely," and a little planning keeps you connected enough for the things that matter. Here's the realistic picture.
Rule #1: only postpaid SIMs work in Ladakh
This trips up more travellers than anything else. Across Ladakh, prepaid SIMs issued outside the region generally do not get signal — only postpaid connections work. If your everyday SIM is prepaid, it will likely be a dead brick the moment you're past the Leh area, regardless of network.
- If you can, travel with at least one postpaid SIM in your group.
- BSNL has historically the widest reach in remote Ladakh, including pockets around Hanle.
- Other networks may work in and around Leh but thin out fast as you head into Changthang.
Rule #2: signal in Hanle itself is patchy at best
Hanle is a small, scattered village at the edge of the Changthang plateau. Even on a working postpaid SIM, expect:
- Intermittent voice/SMS, often only in certain spots or at certain times of day.
- Slow or no mobile data. Don't count on maps, streaming, uploads or video calls.
- Dead zones the moment you drive out toward viewpoints and the observatory.
Treat any bar of signal as a bonus, not a baseline.
Rule #3: Wi-Fi is rare and not something to rely on
Some homestays may have limited connectivity, but you should not book expecting reliable Wi-Fi, and you certainly shouldn't plan to work remotely from Hanle. If staying connected is essential for a day or two, do it from Leh before you leave. Once you're in Hanle, the internet effectively stops — and most people find that's the best part.
How to prepare
- Download everything offline before Leh: offline maps of the route, your permits (also carry printed copies — see Permits for Hanle), booking details, music, and any reading. Assume zero connectivity from the moment you leave Leh.
- Tell people back home you'll be off-grid. Give them your rough itinerary and expected return date so silence doesn't cause worry. "I'll be unreachable for 2–3 days" is the message to send.
- Carry a power bank (or two). Charging points can be limited and the cold drains batteries fast; keep phones warm inside your jacket. More on this in What to Pack for Hanle.
- Carry cash. With no data, UPI and card machines are unreliable — withdraw everything you need in Leh.
The upside
Being unreachable for a couple of days is increasingly rare and quietly wonderful. No notifications, no doomscrolling — just the largest, darkest sky in India overhead. If anything, weak signal is a feature of Hanle, not a bug. Lean into it, and let the night sky be the only thing lighting up your screen-free evening.
