If you're already coming to Hanle, you're within reach of one of the most extraordinary drives on the planet: Umling La, widely recognised as the world's highest motorable road at nearly 5,800 metres. It's a bucket-list detour — but one to treat with real respect.
What Umling La is
Built by the Border Roads Organisation high on the Changthang plateau, Umling La tops out well above Everest Base Camp in elevation. Reaching it by vehicle is a genuine feat, and the views across the bare, otherworldly high desert are unforgettable.
The altitude cannot be overstated
This is higher than almost anywhere you can drive on Earth, and the air holds roughly half the oxygen of sea level.
- Do not attempt it without acclimatising first. Hanle itself (4,300 m) is a good staging point once you've adjusted. Read Acclimatising to Altitude.
- Keep your time at the top short. Snap your photos, take it slow, and descend — lingering invites altitude sickness.
- Anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions should not go without medical clearance.
Permits, vehicle and timing
- You'll need the same border-area permits as Hanle, arranged in Leh — see Permits for Hanle.
- Go with a capable vehicle and an experienced local driver; conditions are extreme and help is far.
- The season is short — roughly the warmer months. Snow and weather can close the road; always check current conditions before setting out.
- Fuel up in advance and carry extra; there's nothing up there.
How to add it to a Hanle trip
Umling La pairs naturally with Hanle since both sit deep in Changthang. A sensible shape: acclimatise in Leh → base in a Hanle homestay for the dark sky → attempt Umling La as a day objective with your driver → return to warmth and rest. Our 3-Day Itinerary can flex to fit it.
Be honest with yourself
Umling La is spectacular, but it's not a casual selfie stop — it's a serious high-altitude undertaking. If your body is struggling even at Hanle, skip it. The mountain will still be there next time.
